i wasnt being racist........i just hate those burkas.

I dont like burkas either, i think they should be banned in this country in public........but is not because of racism, there are strong reasons for not wanting people to conceal themselves in public and hide their identities. Same as i dont think people should be allowed to have their hoods up when in shops ect...

But there is a difference between being outright racist, and disagreeing with a cultures attire for very valid reasons. But i definately dont agree with burkas, but i have nothing against those people as individuals or as a race, i just think it is bad for security.

If i went to afghanastan (and i was a girl) and i wore a bikini i would be executed.......so why are they allowed burkas here?

These are the kind of things I found weird to actually talk about. It's not about religion here is it? I never saw anyone on the server talk about religion. We are here to be friends and have fun. Sounds like a British cultural attitude more than an opinion. I get the feeling that people who believe in banning the burka are too pleased with having found a logical reason to lash out at Islam to be bothered with thinking through more perspectives and potentially arriving at an inconvenient conclusion. In the case of young Brits, I suspect it's simply a matter of repeating catchy lines from people posing as intellectuals.

Bottom line is, it's not harmful, so why ban it? All arguments presented so far have simple explanations that each of you could come up with yourselves. Think about what you're saying, and make sure you're not deceiving yourself into being complicit with a useless suppression of freedom. There is nothing to be gained by shouting foreigners away or forcing other cultures to change. If it's an obvious change for the better, you shouldn't need to do any forcing. The fact that forcing is going on implies that it's not an obvious dilemma.

No one wants to go to another country just to be ridiculed for not following protocol that to you may seem without reason. Just because it may happen to you in foreign countries doesn't make it ok to support doing it in turn in your own country.

BDL, your words stink of either racism or lack of thoughtfulness. I can see that you have not taken the time to actually objectively examine the beauty or lack thereof of the burka. You've heard other people talk shit about it in lieu of attempting real debate, and you're following suite. Burkas come in all sorts of colors and patterns, and often they look like kimonos. You would likely call a woman in a kimono beautiful; your hatred of burkas is a superficial hate generated by someone else, not you.

Think for yourself. There are plenty of rational people who choose to wear the burka because it is part of their culture and it helps them identify with their people. It does not have to be about oppression at all; everyone likes to fit in to the social role they believe they are supposed to play. Muslim women donning Muslim women's garb is one such example. I do the same thing with my clothing.

There are much better ways to go about criticizing social attitudes toward women than to make those very women feel forcibly cut off from their culture. Please give the issue some serious thought and even talk to a variety of Muslim women to get their input. It is a complex issue and there's much potential for emotional hurt.

Nick you are wrong. I dont look for any excuses to hate or victimise islamic people, or any other culture for that matter. I dont like burkas in society if they happen to create a disguise, for make their identities vague. I dont want to see people disguising themselves in public, because you dont know who they are or what they are capable of. And think how easy it would be for these muslim people to shoplift or whatever else, they have no proper identities because they refuse to show there faces in public, and i think public concealment is wrong, for whatever reason.

Please dont claim that the british have a vendetta against islamic people, or that the use the issue of islamic attire to fuel the fire against them, that is not the case at all, it just seems that the general concensus througout britain is that we dont like people concealing themselves in public, that doesnt just go for islams wearing burhas, that goes for youths wearing hoodies, people wearing bike helmets and balaclavas ect when in shops. As far as im concerned, when in public everybody has a right to see who you are, and who they are talking to, and also be safe in the knowladge their identity is correct ect..... Peroid!

Now, you mentioned different styles of burkas, that is absolutely fine, so long as whatever they wear, does not conceal their face, that is my only issue! Thats not racist or hated, its peace of mind and social security!

Also im a big believer in trying to adopt the culture that you reside in, im not saying forget your roots, your beliefs and your own culture, but you should at least be prepared to do things 'a little bit british' and try not to be stubborn or extremist about britain, instead try to sample and involve yourself in culture.

When in rome, you do as the romans do. For example, in dubai you are not allowed to consume alcohol in public (its punishable by imprisonment), however in England you are. So despite the fact i would be dissapointed, i would respect the fact that im in thier country and i must accept their cultures and their laws. Are they being racist against me? No i dont think so, but yes its a stupid law in my opinion, but if i dont like it, then i can leave, simple as that. But while i am there i must respect their culture.

As far as im concerned, if i got shitfaced in public and disobayed thier laws whats the difference between people concealing themseves in public in england and disobaying ours? (even though it isnt a law yet, but hopefully it will be.)

Now i beleive people can wear what they want, when they want, as long as their is attire does not cause offence, is indecent, or create hidden identity or concealment. Now if islamics wear burkas that do not create concealment then that is fine by me! But if anybody has a problem with this, i'll gladly help them pack their bags....

Far be it from us being racist and fueling cultural hatred, i think us brits and americans are too soft. We appease all other cultures and races so they can do as they please even when in our country, then we still get accused of being racists.

I would just say that tying the burka to Islam is wrong. If you read the Koran it doesn't say anywhere that you have to wear a burka to be a good muslim. The burka is a cultural item, has nothing to do with religion. One of my best friends is muslim.

Where public security is concerned many cities now have security cameras in place. Concealing the face in any way evades this security, whether innocent or not. I believe burkas should not be allowed in public places. I have never seen a beautiful burka. Most are drab and single colored. Head scarves are a different matter. I really don't see problem with them as they don't cover the face, just the head. I grew up with some muslims, from pakistan, in my neighborhood and the girls always wore head scarves. It wasn't a big deal. The media, lawyers and political correctness has run amok with this stuff I'm afraid. It's all really sad and unnecessary.
