i haven't looked into it lately but i'd make sure i have a good sound card 1st. if you got that covered then you could look at reviews. cnet.com is a good place. for people in usa, even if you're not, newegg.com has many reviews by users. so if you find something you might like check out people's reviews there b4 you buy. i'm more into linux/ home server/ htpc/ virtualization stuff at the moment. i do know in past logitech has some good speaker sets but they also had some that didn't have good reviews. so caveat emptor.

good luck

well a lot of motherboards come with cheap onboard sound, with chips mostly made by realtek or idt these days. sound quality is usually far superior with a good soundcard. creative used to make the best ones. you can hear a huge difference between a creative and cheap onboard sound, especially in anything using midi files. with soundcards, or onboard chips, there are preprogrammed sampled voices that are used for playback of many different types of sounds. add-in sound cards usually have way better preprogrammed sampled voices. if you play a midi file you can tell diff in like 2 seconds. if you don't have really good hearing and only listen to cds/mp3s it might not be as important a factor to you. if you have an idea what you might wanna buy search it on newegg.com and check out the reviews. it will at least keep you from getting something really crappy. newegg.com is prolly the best online store in the usa to buy computer/networking stuff.

swifty, i don't know anything about this product. i would check reviews and make sure you really need it first. i've always used creative internal cards in a spare pci slot, now pci-e slot. if your friend knows something about sound on computers i'd have him talk to you a bit more, check out you machine and tell you what he thinks. i usually have paid between 100-200 us dollars for my soundcards. i can't be without a good soundcard because i have keyboards, and do sequencing as well. standard onboard sound blows in my experience.
