PostSubject: Buying new desktop   Mon 06 Oct 2014, 1:59 pm

What's going on guys, good news, as some of you may know a large reason of why I stopped being active before is because of my really shitty computer. BUT, I'm planning on buying a new laptop in about a month-2 months from now and I'm open to suggestions on what I should buy. Price range is around 800-900 and I'm planning on buying during Black Friday/ Cyber Monday around that time (huge sales across America, for my European friends that don't know). So I probably have a lot of flexibility when it comes to looking for a purchase. Nothing cutting too close to the 800-900 range as I'm sure i'm going to have to pay taxes, shipping, accessories etc. Thoughts from any of my tech savvy clan mates?

I mean it.
Buy one of these and I will fly to Florida ( which I'll do anyway soon xD oh pal i love my job ) and slap you xD

Im no pro for Laptops.
Actually more like tower PCs.

I am fan of ASUS laptops, they are top quality, 800-900 dollars is 630-715 euros, for which you may get decent laptop if you are going to get laptop actually (about tower PCs I don't know much, about laptops its different)

Laptops wise, I'd recommend a high spec'd Sony VAIO. PC wise I have no idea.

Get a Tower Very Happy
Better long time investment.

But you cant easily carry it arround or move it in the room tough Very Happy
I got both.
A pretty high end Tower ( see my PC Setup post^^ ).
And a HP Laptop but i only use it for Banking, Trade and other business stuff like work of course.
Its pretty usefull if i get stuck in a Hotel while waiting for a flight back home.

Thing is i'm buying a laptop to be transportable. All the more convenient for school as well. Where's a good website where I could customize a good laptop? And can someone give me some specs on it?

Same here. I have also seen bad things with Acer's as well.

I suggest going to www.newegg.com and looking at their gaming laptop. Wide variety of computers and prices. I suggest a Msi, Lenovo or Dell. Right now I have a cheap dell laptop but it is still going strong as a backup computer with games 4 years old.

Having ASUS for 5 years doesn't mean much... It cant run newer games anymore I guess...

ACER is the same S H I T :/

I suggest LENOVO... even though it's a Chinesse product I know many users who like it...

Then it's HP or MSI

All of the manufacturers are about the same. I've had MSI laptops whose hinges broke after a year, same with Lenovo. ASUS and Acer usually have the lowest prices for similar hardware. Unless you buy flagship models, the build quality is usually similar. All of the manufacturers tend to have weird problems or bad apples. I would trust ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, MSI, HP, and Sony equally. I don't really trust other manufacturers. Custom laptops aren't really a thing and I don't recommend trying to get one. Here are some recommendations:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314594
$770 - If you're going for a big desktop replacement and gaming laptop, this laptop has a 17.3" screen, Core i7 processor, dedicated GeForce GT 750M graphics card, 8GB RAM, 1000GB hard drive. It won't be fun lugging around this massive laptop if you're expecting to carry it over your shoulder as you walk around town/campus. Battery life won't be great.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314556
$500 - If you want a laptop that still has a strong CPU but can only play older games or games that are a few years old at low settings because it has no dedicated graphics card, this laptop has a 14" screen and is 2 lbs lighter than the previous one. The smaller dimensions and lighter weight make it much easier to carry around or fit in a backpack. Battery life will be noticeably better but not outstanding. The processor is half as strong, it has half as much RAM, and half as much hard drive space. It's still a strong laptop and will easily do anything except high-end gaming/media editing.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K2U3CLW
$285 - If you want a cheap, portable laptop that's only good for office productivity software and surfing the web. Same screen size, weight, RAM, and hard drive space as the $500 one. Slightly better battery life. Processor is about 60% as powerful.

Laptop processor benchmarks:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/laptop.html

High end graphics card benchmarks, including for laptop cards:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

Note that if you have an Intel HD #### "graphics card," it's really just integrated graphics on the processor. It basically means you can only play old games or new games with bad graphics.

Screen size is the largest factor in battery life. Consider that if you want portability, most of the time it will just be for productivity/web surfing. For a lot of people, it's better to get a cheap small laptop with good battery life that's easy to fit into bags. If you have a large/heavy laptop, you will end up not bringing it with you very often because it's too inconvenient. If you get a small laptop with good battery life, you're much more likely to decide to bring it with you because it's easy to do so and its long battery life makes it useful once you get it to your destination. If you go with a cheap one, you'll have money left over for getting a custom/powerful desktop computer for doing the big stuff like gaming.

Some people do get good use out of powerful gaming laptops. But be honest with yourself about where you want to use it. If you think you're going to take your 17" gaming laptop to school / coffee shops every day, you're kidding yourself. I know from experience. Razz

Did you mean 1000GB? Razz.

I'd link my Sony Vaio laptop but Sony seem to be discontinuing their range faster than a failing company sheds shares.

No, 1000MB. You can install JK2 as your operating system and then you're out of room.

lol. Oh, another thing to point out is that laptops often suffer from overheating issues, making it even less desirable to get a gaming laptop. The chances of running into CPU or GPU overheating problems is quite high with any laptop running games. If the model you happen to buy has a problem with that, you'll end up getting even less performance out of it than its rated specifications. And even if it works in the beginning, over time the peanut butter-tier thermal paste they use on laptop CPUs has a good chance of becoming cotton candy, and you'll need to replace it and hope that it solves overheating issues.

As you can tell I'm not a fan of gaming laptops. Wink

Almost all laptop HDDs are 5400rpm. It's best to buy a SSD yourself. IIRC that laptop has space for two hard drives. If not and disk performance is an issue, it's best to swap to a SSD yourself. Often times manufacturers way overcharge for SSDs or use ones with poor performance. You can get a fast 128GB SSD for your OS/program installation for about $80.

Yes definitely, although I love my VAIO, christ it overheats like a bi tch. There is a setting in some games called SSAO or something and if that's on, my laptop will just power off after about an hour of game play. Older games work fine, but you try run a new game which need higher specs, then it will overheat and switch off unless you have some kind of external cooler at work.

Edit: Bearing in mind the VAIO I have is like 3 or 4 years old, so newer laptops might have worked on fixing this problem I don't know, but overheating is definitely an issue when running high req games on a laptop.

HPs are or were prone to overheat, since moment friend told me that I don't like HPs, I don't have direct experience but some friends have.
ASUS notebook I have doesn't much overheat, you just feel warm on your palms, but if you are doing stuff on it several consecutive hours your hands will get sweaty (but that's natural). This feeling is very uncomfortable during very hot days in summer (when the fan keeps blowing hot air on my hands) but that is also natural since the CPU needs to be cooled down otherwise it would fry itself.
Before this laptop I had Toshiba laptop which I had roughly 2-3 years until the screen backlight blew out (I was doing things and suddenly my screen blackened and refused to come back to life, and in authorized shop they asked freakin 400 euros for fixing it, so I thought the heck no, ill buy new laptop). Then I chose ASUS and it proved to be decently strong and reliable laptop.

And about the 5400 vs 7200 rpm. Its big advantage to have 7200 rpm HDD, todays laptops have quite big storage and 7200 rpm disk can provide faster searching through files and doing all the other things you surely know soo... im sticking with those
