The future of JK2 Empty
PostSubject: The future of JK2   The future of JK2 Icon_minitimeMon 09 Nov 2015, 7:32 pm

Do you guys think this game will die in a few years?

If so, maybe we could toss a few ideas in this thread to keep this game alive and running, for even in the possible long run.

Maybe advertisements of sorts? Maybe even some kind of remake for JK2 to bring people back, vamping up the graphics and bringing it to this generation of graphics?

Something to think about.

Also, I don't want this game dying, and I want to emulate the excitement, wonder and adventure full servers brought; especially on SoL.

No one wants the game to die I just dont know about the long run because the game itself is old already. Remaking whole game is very hard task, I think there were attempts (?) just dunno if successful. But I agree that as much as possible people know about JK2 the better, though competition from other games is strong. How you meant the advertising? Or where? Youtube? Some forums?
It would be good the excitement to continue

This could potentially create a ripple-effect; the more people know about this, the more may be inclined to make a remake.

There is a HD remake in the works as far as I know. Someone posted a topic about it a while ago. Also we seem to get our biggest surges in new players when a topic about JK2\JKA hits the front page of reddit.com or it's on sale on Steam.

This game have been in this dying state for years, and every year there have been someone saying, "The game will probably die before the year is over". Yet here we are, and we still have between 60-100 dedicated players left (If we combine all the versions of JK2), who all love the community Very Happy There have even been a few old players returning every once in a while; some of them left soon after, but some of them even decided to stay Smile

- Not too sure how good advertisment would work. When Steam have had their Star Wars sales, there have usually been an increase in players, but these new players are often either met by more experienced players, who isn't always too friendly and lames them until they leave, or with servers filled with bots. Plus, JK2 is a very skill based game, and some players, if they are met by the two scenarios I mentioned, simply never get that far.

- I am not sure you realize how big a job it would be to make a remake of JK2 Smile Some teams of great modders have already tried in JKA, or even "just" the remake of a some of the Dark Forces levels for singleplayer (With custom assets), but all of them have ended up giving up on it, not because they don't want to see the work finished, but because it takes a lot of time and a lot of will Smile Also, if players want good graphics, there are a lot of other games to choose from; JK2 is more about the community Smile

Our best bet for a HD remake would be this project, Jedi Knight 2: Reborn (Or Jedi Knight 2 HD Remake, as it is also called). This is however only one guy making it, which I have huge respect for, but as he said himself:

No. If I was, I would be doomed to fail. I am not a one man army, and you can't create a game like JK2 without a dedicated team. I am working on this in my spare time, mostly on sundays. I appreciate all the help and support I get, but I am not working on this 24/7 and I am not rushing things.
Aside from the few people who contribute to the project, he is the only developer, so it could take quite a while for this to be finished, sadly, if it is ever finished. I hope he keep on working on it, but I fear he will end up with the feeling of the project being too big for one guy (And occasionally a few artists who help with textures), like the rest of the teams who have tried :/

Sorry, I understated the whole remaking of JK2, but I was saying it in a transparent, but colloquial way. I'm sure the chances of a remake getting finished is slim, but I was just throwing out a few possibilities. I'm sure this game will be alive for a very-long time, but to get that 'really alive' spark I was referring to.

But yeah, I am sure it would be a prodigious job to remake JK2, I understand that, I am probably sure a thread like this has probably appeared in the past, but I just wanna cycle a few ideas is all, I know it may not make a large difference, but it could nonetheless.

The way I worded it did seem I don't fathom the time, effort and complexity of remaking a game especially on a small team.

Don't worry about it Inev, I've made a few posts like yours before Very Happy. Activity will come and go though as has been said before. There are a couple of big Steam sale periods coming up in Christmas and Winter, so hopefully JK2 will go on sale again and we'll have a new influx of players come in.

We just have to make sure we give new players a helping hand with learning the ropes and giving them some tips on the fighting style they prefer (force or no force).

The release of Battlefront may bring a few players into JK2, also.

But yeah, Hektor's' idea seems cool, I'll go with that.

I'd say we are far off from the game dying. Activity the last two months has been at the point it was when I first started playing 2 1/2 years ago, and as Epic said with Black Friday and Christmas steam sales most likely coming up, there should be a good group of newbies. The one thing I would like to see is less servers on the master list. I think by spacing out our player base over so many different servers, we make the game look less active than it is. I get having a server like JJ that is strictly NF, but I think besides that we'd really only need two or three other servers. At the very least, I think getting rid of all the dead servers none of us goto would help so that new players don't goto one of them and think the game is dead. Anyone know if there is a way to go about that?

Well because someone pays for the servers they will stay there I guess. You can filter what servers appear in server list (like dont display bots only servers I think) or just add to favourites those only which you are visiting. Maybe if this was spreaded somehow among new players or people who are looking for activity. Otherwise I dunno lol

You could try and find out whom the server owners are, and go from there.

Regardless though, unlikely, unless they leave a link on a bot like SoL does leading to their forum(s).

Players without JK2MV can't filter bots, sadly :/ So imagine if you were new, and you saw a serverlist with some servers having it look like there would be 8 or more players, but every server you join just contains bots and no players, unless they hit the right server at the right time :/

On my server we only have a bot with a link in spectator, so even players without jk2mv, who have been there before, knows that if there is more than 1 on the server, it means there are people there. On SoL, there would have to be more than 8 in order for one to be sure, because of your bot_minplayers settings, to be certain it isn't just bots - new players don't usually check the server info to see the information on the server Smile

Exactly! That happened to me when I first joined until I finally found a real person who told me about SoL server. Does anyone know who owns all those extra servers? There are servers on the masterlist I've seen for 2 years that have simply never been active like CA for example. I think that one is still up, and occasionally ill go there and find a few random people who I assume are new.
