A verry interresting thing is going on in the world of hobby programmers, and that thing is openjk. Currently they are focussing on acadamy but they might finish outcast if they feel like it and when they finsihed the long hard work which is reprogramming.
The main branch is focusing on rewriting the engine and improving it here and there. To grab an unfinished test compile for acadamy : http://builds.openjk.org/ Be warned that these are stil a work in progress and not perfect !
What i am waiting for is a branch with the IOQ3 renderer 2 which means maps configured to use this renderer to its maximum will be able to get a 2012 worthy graphics set-up.
This is the openjk renderer 2 branch with a specialized map :
you can read up on this unfinished not yet usable second renderer here : http://jkhub.org/topic/2804-rd-rend2/
this is what i read about and could figure out from the forums and the devs on irc ;
1 - jk 2 outcast is late on the list, their focus is first and foremost on acadamy. 2 - they do not seem to be doing more then RENDERING, and pure engine based rewrites.
Also note : renderer 2 is a seperate branch. do not hope to see jK2 mp in renderer 2 soon, as they are still knee deep in acadamy and getting it running at full there.
Github : --- The purpose of this project is to maintain and improve the Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast games, developed by Raven Software. This project does not attempt to rebalance or otherwise modify core gameplay.
Major enhancement changes are very low priority at this time unless patches are made available and which do not alter the core functionality of gameplay or the stock renderer itself.
Please use discretion when making issue requests on github. The JKHub sub-forum is a better place for larger discussions on changes that aren't actually bugs. ----
they already have 64 bit support for non windows versions of jk3.
They can explain it better then me so read this : http://jkhub.org/topic/1974-openjk-general-topic/
