They've got rid of it thankfully. The huge outcry from the gaming community and Gabe's bad time on Reddit must have have finally made them realize how bad an idea it was! Internet 1 - 0 Raping Customers.
Edit: This really does show the power of the internet and a customer base that can change business's minds. Before this Reddit thread Thread Valve were going full steam ahead on their paid mods plan. After Gabe himself created that thread and heard the voices of 10's of thousands of gamers they've scrapped it. Just goes to show, we do have a voice sometimes. Unfortunately the twats at EA would never listen to us and they'll have seen this paid modding idea and come Battlefront you know they'll find a way to make money on that too!

| Basically, there's been a modding community in games for years and the guys who create the mods do it for free and there are large mod sites and stuff. Valve\Steam decided they were going to start charging for these mods or allowing content creators to charge for them. Which doesn't sound like a bad idea because if you create content that you put a lot of time into, especially some of the mods in Skyrim for example where you can tell 100s of hours have gone into creating them, then it would be nice for them to get some financial recognition.
However, Valve handled it all really badly and it was open to abuse straight away. It split the Skyrim modding community up pretty much immediately and all hell broke loose on the internet. In the end, after much protesting including an online petition with over 100k signatures, Valve back tracked and took the paid mods option down.

| Nothing from my point of view. A lot of people were mad because they see the modding community as a hobby and it's something they do for the love of the game etc. Others were mad that people could exploit it by just downloading a mod and putting it up on Steam as their own. | |

Many people say this is to support the modders, but 75% of this goes to companies, and the money you get is only added to "Steam Wallet" (I have heard) and you only get that payment when you reach $400 in total sales. Also if a Steam Update renders the mod useless and you already paid for it, and the modder won't update it ... well tough luck. Personally I wanted to ignore the conflict, didn't like what the users were saying about modding in TES "it's a labour of love" (try making one, lol.) And fellow modders trashtalking other users and pulling their mods from other places so you would have to buy them at Steam if you didn't download the mod from another site, e.g: Nexus.

Mods especially in TES case (I am a huge fan of the elder scrolls games btw) was an option for players 1) that want to add alot of extra fun into games or B) beat the game entirly and want the option to add their own content. In the sense that iff you know your way around a construction set for TES (I do) you can virtually make the game how you want and add any content you desire. I don't feel it is neccesary for me to be forced to pay for the same thing I can do myself that is made by bethesda themselves. Also the fact that modders don't make mods for recognition or money, they make it for the fun of the game and the fun of a socially adapting community.
