Trying to blame this on President Obama is simply playing politics. This was Congress's fault, and if a majority of the blame must be placed, it rests on Republican representatives in Congress.

Nick is right. It was the congress fault. If they had been agreed earlier it wouldnt be so bad. What s so bad about socialism ? Even russians work out with it well. Also germany has a mix of both of them. Socialism and capitalism.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here Wehr, I just disagree with you and your party. I've been watching what's been going on with this issue, and I think the primary failure of the government on this issue is due to ultimatums and political moves on the part of the Republican party in a time when we need compromise. That's how I see it based on my observations. I'm not in a homosexual relationship with Obama, he's just a politician who says things I tend to agree with. I'm just calling it the way I see it. Many people agree with me. Many people agree with you. There's no need for you to label me so "other."

As for our previous discussion, I - and most economists - still stand by what was done. The current situation is not a result of that legislation, and it seems to me that you are playing the same political game as your Republican representatives by trying to claim that it is. As I see it, the situation appears to be a result of the deterioration of Congress's ability to function as a whole. And in my opinion, Republicans refusing to compromise by increasing tax revenue as well as decreasing spending is a primary reason for that deterioration. Increasing tax revenue and decreasing spending are both means to the same end. Both sides have to give a little (or a lot) to reach a compromise that is fair to everyone.

Nick, I totally disagree with you. We have a 14.5 trillion dollar deficit. I'm sorry but we cannot afford many of the programs that the democrats champion. People are going to have to suffer to resolve our deficit. There is no way around it. The democrats would not come to terms with the necessary cuts. You show a lack of knowledge here as well. Cuts in government spending are far less damaging to an economy then increased taxation. With the ongoing fragile state of the economy it is best not to raise taxes yet. I'm a moderate and I favored an increase on the most wealthy. Obama has all but insured this will not happen now.

In bringing up past discussions, Obamacare was just a part and parcel of the many anti business stances Obama has taken. If you want to improve the state of the poor you better provide a prosperous environment for business.

It seems like we agree on a lot then, Wehr. I agree that much more cuts need to be made - the blame is on Congress, not the Republicans alone. Democrats need to cut more, Republicans need to support taxation on the wealthiest Americans. I'm not familiar enough with the complex implications of taxation for the rest of Americans, I'm sure you know more about how that would affect the economy than I do. But increased taxation of the middle and even upper class was never on the table anyway, so I guess it's irrelevant.

Regardless, it sounds like we agree on the proceedings in Congress. In the long run you may have been right about the healthcare bill coming at the wrong time. I hadn't foreseen that Congress would fail so utterly to do their job, but you may have predicted that such an instability would have to be warded against. On the other hand, the potentially increased access to healthcare provided by the legislation may have a more positive impact on citizens as a whole, such that it's worth the cost - ie, cuts should be made in less valuable programs to provide for something much more important like healthcare. Time will tell.

Anyway, I still stand by the goals of the legislation and the precedent it set, as well as a large number of the immediate effects. The healthcare bill in and of itself has not and will not tip the scale of collapse on its own, and the potential was and still is there for it to help tip the scale in the country's favor rather than against it, in my opinion; working to further improve it can realize this. There are elements of the bill's initial implementation that are anti-business, I agree. But overall I think it's a good thing for America, business and otherwise. As I said already, in the long run you may be right that the instability at this point in time wasn't worth it, but then again it would never have been passed setting positive precedent if it hadn't been then.

Keeping in mind that many Americans such as myself support the healthcare bill (it wasn't one man's evil doing), healthcare isn't the place to make sacrifices. So with a large portion of America supporting the bill, its having positive effects on healthcare for Americans, and there still being options to solve our problems, I'm suggesting that it's time to look elsewhere and make progress through compromise that puts us in the right direction. Huge spending cuts and taxation on the wealthiest included.

Now, what did Obama do that insured taxation of the wealthiest would not occur? Did he not play politics well enough, wasn't firm enough? I'm not sure what you meant by that.

Really. This is theoretical of course..but I feel the need to explain this.

In this history of communism, wealth was spread throughout the people, who worked all day long and had no identity because of it. In the end (circa 1991) the system of communism collapsed on itself in the USSR. This is because of the US policy of containment, preventing the spread of communism to other nations. However it did make it to China, Vietnam, Cuba, and North Korea. For that reason, communism is still alive today. Now if wealth is spread like American Democrats suggest, the US could adopt a style similar to communism. No identity, and no capitalism to keep our economy afloat. Economy is an issue right now for the entire world. The last thing we need is the American economy depreciating any further. That is why we tend to not adopt socialism.

Cuba and the Asian countries including Russia itself builded their communism through the revolutions. Belive me you'll need more than just spreading the wealth. To crush the wealthiest you need to grind them between taxation and inflation, only then everyone will live equally.

My opinion is, Obama was inspired from the European healthcare reforms not to mention Swedens reforms. My country is run by liberal-convervatives and they take step from both socialism and communism.
